Gout is the result of too much uric acid in the bloodstream. This is then deposited in the joints where over time will harden, resulting in the joints becoming inflamed. Uric acid comes from the purine that is contained in most of the foods people eat - specifically that of purine rich sea foods such as, shell fish, crab, lobster, and beverages such as, wine and beer. Any bodily function related to the breakdown of uric acid that is way beyond normal standards can lead to gout attacks. Gout is potentially life threatening when a large concentration of uric acid builds up in the kidneys, as this can cause the formation of stones that can cause a blockage - an event that can cause lead to kidney or renal failure.
To prevent gout attacks, people who consume foods rich in purine should limit, and even abstain from eating such foods when the condition acts up. A simple change of diet and lifestyle and strictly following a gout diet can do wonders to curtailing the problem.
